As of late I have been involved in a Crowdsourcing contest on a well known and advertised site, a link to which is on my own website where designers were asked to come up with ideas for a fashion industry brand.
After a few failed ideas I came back after thinking the brief through some more with a more unique design, one in which the 'Contest Holder' liked. We went a bit further with the design to the point where the 'Contest Holder' told me that my design would be the winner!
Save to say that at the end of the project time I was pretty happy and I got the vibe from the 'Contest Holder' that she was also.
Only after a long, hard process of revisions and tweaks here and there was I to be told that my logo was "Too Complex for the Brand Identity" they needed it to represent.
Now any designer would probably think the same thing now, 'Well its your own fault for taking part in something thats damaging the industry' and doing work without any guarantee of payment and I guess that's true.
It has taught me something though, if you ARE to enter into crowdsourcing, make sure you understand your limits as you wont always be rewarded for your hard work and creative ideas.
Will I enter into crowdsourcing again?
I won't shy away from it but I will think twice about the amount of work I put into a concept in future.
