I was expecting to take a lot of photos and video, as is the norm with any of our Florida holidays, and rather than buying multiple Memory Cards (which may have been easier!) I decided to take my laptop and transfer all the files in the evening once back at the hotel. Not only did this take up valuable holiday time, it also took up time I would be spending with my wife and simply enjoying our trip.
Once back from a glorious two weeks in the Florida sun I was immediately moaning about the process of taking my laptop and transferring all the files daily and also asking the question “why isn’t there a product out there, specifically an external hard drive, that you can just insert a memory card and it transfers the files?”
This past Christmas my wife bought me my first DSLR, the Nikon D3300. I knew taking pictures on this was going to require a large memory card along with some sort of External Hard Drive to store all the RAW files on. Whilst doing a little bit of searching around on Google I found the WD My Passport Wireless. I was amazed that I hadn’t heard of this before in all honesty. A Hard Drive that is compact, portable, can be used wirelessly and also has the ability to transfer SD Card images in an instant. All this for a competitive price also at £179.
So with my birthday fast approaching my lovely wife asked me again what I’d like and so I suggested getting one of these HDD’s. The set up was pretty easy, it wasn’t ‘quite’ plug and play but with a swift download of the WD My Passport App it becomes Plug and Play. I will say that my first Hard Drive had an error and kept flashing red which meant contacting customer support but because I had only had the product a couple weeks I simply could return it and get a replacement!
Onto my second Hard Drive and I’ve not looked back since, it’s worked perfectly. It does exactly what I wanted this type of product to do for me. I can now go out for a day taking pictures, this little device comes with me in my camera bag and once I have finished at a certain location I will simply put the SD Card into the slot on the side of the device and start the transfer. It really is that simple. Once finished you can check on the app what has been transferred just to make sure all the files are there and then you are free to format your memory card for the next location.
The other great thing about this device it connecting it to a wireless internet source. If you’re in a free Wi-Fi spot, simply connect your phone to the Wi-Fi, open up the app and turn on the device in the wireless mode and you can view the images on your phone on the go. I would imagine this is great for people traveling long distances, being able to stop off and view your images instantly on your phone or tablet.
So there we have it, I asked the question and now I have something that does exactly what I need it to do, all with a massive 1TB of storage also. There is a 500GB and 2TB version also depending on your usage but for me the 1TB is a good middle ground.
I would recommend this Hard Drive to any travelers taking pictures with Memory Cards, any photographers in general actually. I am sure there are similar products on the market which are worth considering but this for me is a winner!
